First World War Australian Distinguished Conduct Medal group, award to Bombardier Arthur Hewett, late Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train. Group includes G.V.R. Distinguished Conduct Medal, impressed named to263 BMDR: A. T. HEWETT. 47/BY:12/ARMY BDE: AUST: F.A.; 1914/15 Star, impressed named to 263 A.B.DVR: A. T. HEWETT. 1/R.A.N.B.T.; British War Medal un named; Victory Medal impressed named to 263 SGT. A. T. HEWETT. R.A.N.B.T. & 1914-18 Belgium Croix De Guerre. Medals display court mounted & comes with copies service papers. Arthur Thomas Hewett was born in Wickepin, Western Australia 18th September 1891. He had previously served with the 2nd Field Company, Australian Engineers, before enlisting on the 20th May 1915 with the Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train, in Korrong, Victoria. He embarked for Suez on the 4th June 1915, being charged with A.W.O.L. in Ismailia. Transferred as an Artificer to the 12th Field Artillery Brigade 2nd April 1916. Bombardier 25th July 1916. Awarded D.C.M. 4th June 1916, the citation reading: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at a critical moment during the firing of a barrage by his battery. A shell having burst near a gun and caused casualties which would have affected the barrage, he ran to the rescue and worked the gun until more men arrived. (Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 20th December 1917), promoted Sergeant on the 31st October 1918, he was awarded the Belgian Croix De Guerre (London Gazette 5th April 1919) and he returned to Australia 13th April 1919.
