Description
***SOLD***
Offered is a fantastic example of an 1831 pattern, Queen Victoria era, General Officer’s Mameluke Sword, made by Wilkinson Sword of London in 1856.
The sword features a twin ‘p’ shaped ivory grips, with stylised gilt patterns on both sides of the grip spine, with gilded floral grip studs. One side has an edge crack and minor bumps but does not detract. A gilt & carmine twisted bullion knot is tied to the insert hole to pommel. The detail on the stylised and decorated gilded brass cross guards is still very evident, with the round finials, scrollwork & General’s sword & baton in wreath motif to both sides.
The 78 cm long slightly curved blade has the royal crown in sunburst, VR royal cypher & elaborate floral design etchings, running 3/4 down the length of both sides of the blade. The forte is etched for the maker Wilkinson Sword of London & correctly star proofed. The blade spine is engraved with the Wilkinson catalogue/issue number 7467 (see below for details).
The swords slides neatly into the all brass sheath, with star shaped embossed ring mounts. The scabbard is in very good condition, with one very small dent to drag. There are some grease residue marks, which we have not cleaned, but have brought out the shine in the scabbard somewhat. The collection this came from has the reference pen mark to the rear of the scabbard and underside of the gilt cross guard. We have not cleaned this, but it should be easy to remove.
The sword comes with a 25th March 1968 letter from the Wilkinson Sword Company detailing this sword, numbered 7467 as ‘A General’s Scimitar in steel scabbard, Dated 20th May 1856.’ No name is given for the purchaser.
A truly fantastic condition piece, as worn by a General Officer of the British Army during the early/mid period of the reign of Queen Victoria. Just imagine this stunning piece in your own collection?
Overall length: 92cm.
