The blade has battle & laurel leaf etchings running 2/3 down the length of both sides of the 72 cm thin straight blade. Offered is a good original WW1 era, named United States Navy Officer’s 1852 Pattern presentation sword & leather belt assembly.
The sword features a ray skin pebbled grip with gilt twist wire, being mounted onto a gilt brass backstrap & USN laurel leaf branched guard. The blade has battle & laurel leaf etchings running 2/3 down the length of both sides of the 72 cm thin straight blade. Excellent condition US eagle and ‘US’ & sailor ‘s mottos to etc., with the engraved name for Carl S. Ziesel to the name panel. The blade is maker marked/engraved for Jacob Reed & Sons, Philadelphia to ricasso with star proof to opposite side. The scabbard retains both suspension rings & lockets, numbered '17' for hanging and large style maritime ornate drag. The leather outer is in good condition. The scabbard & guard gilt finish shows use and wear overall, but is still very bright for its age. The sword comes with a USN buckle, belt & hangers for attachment/wear of the sword. Overall length of the sword: 87 cm.
Lieutenant Commander Carl Stanley Ziesel was born in Philadelphia on the 13th January 1893, being commissioned into the US Navy as Lieutenant (Dental Surgeon) on the 20th February 1917. He was assigned to the troopship S.S. Leviathan, a captured German ocean liner (Vaterland) which was used to ferry US troops to Europe during the war. He was honourably discharged on the 16th July 1921. A copy of his service card/record is included with this sword. He is listed as having died in September 1968 in Pinellas, Florida.
