The medal was instituted on 1 January 1909 for service in campaigns on India’s borders. The ‘Waziristan 1919-1921’ clasp was awarded for service in Waziristan between 6 May 1919 and 31 May 1921, the ‘Waziristan 1921-24’ clasp for service in Waziristan between 21 December 1921 and 31 March 1924 and the ‘North West Frontier 1930-31’ clasp was awarded for service in operations on the North West Frontier between 23 April 1930 and 22 March 1931 against the Afridis.
