WW1 Jewish Australian officer ‘amputee’ medal trio & badges to Captain Percy Goldstein, 55th BN. A.I.F. 1914-15 Star, impressed named LIEUT. P. H. GOLDSTEIN. 17/BN. A.I.F.; British War and Victory Medals, impressed named CAPTAIN P. H. GOLDSTEIN. A.I.F. Medals swing mounted as worn, coming with ‘Souvenir of Egypt/Cairo’ engraved dog tag – *LIEUT. P. H. GOLDSTEIN 4th Reinft 17th Batt. 5th Brigade *A.I.F.* J, rising sun collar badge, 3 officer’s rank pips, 2 R.A.S. badges #257767 & 257919, Limbless & Maimed Assoc. brass & enamel badge #457 & Flying Doctors Auxiliary badge. Comes with copy of pages of service record. Captain Percy Hirsch Goldstein was born 26th August 1891 in Albert Park, Victoria. His enlistment papers note him as ‘Jewish’. Educated Sydney Grammar School and was a commissioned Cadet. Shows he applied for his initial commission as a 2nd Lt 1st July 1911. Enlisted into the A.I.F. 18th August 1915, allotted to 4th Reinforcements of the 17th Bn. Commissioned Lieutenant shortly afterwards, being transferred to 55th Bn 16th February 1916. Gained Captaincy 16th July 1916. Severely wounded 2nd April 1917 (GSW right leg), to hospital in England, rest homes etc. including the 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Southall in Middlesex. Supernumerary listed 2nd July 1917. Returned to Australia 15th February 1919, being struck off list 3 days later. Shown as living post war Manly, Mackellar, New South Wales (last shown 1949 Census). These were bought from the extended family, who stated Percy lost his leg as a result of failed operations on the wound, resulting in amputation. This fits in with the inclusion of his limbless & maimed badge. Rare to find a commissioned Jewish A.I.F. group, the first we’ve seen in many years.
