Cased Knight Bachelor’s Badge awarded to Sir Walter Russell. Silver gilt & enamels, measuring 63mm high. Light areas of red enamel chips, with pin back & catch to scalloped reverse. Hallmarks for 1934. In case of issue. Marked Sir Walter Russel to base. Sir Walter Westley Russell CVO RA (31 May 1867 – 16 April 1949) was a British painter and art teacher. He became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1926 and served as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from 1927 to 1942. He was knighted in 1935 for services to the Arts. The dignity of Knight Bachelor is the basic and lowest rank of a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not as a member of one of the organised orders of chivalry; it is a part of the British honours system. Knights Bachelor are the most ancient sort of British knight (the rank existed during the 13th century reign of King Henry III), but Knights Bachelor rank below knights of chivalric orders. Knighthood is usually conferred for public service; amongst its recipients are all male judges of Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice in England.
