Description

Offered is an original set of medals, photos and documents relating to the service of Sergeant William Lewis, who served in the British Army during the Boer War, First World War, as well as in Egypt & India.

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Transvaal, Orange Free State, sloped engraved named to 6550. Pte. W. LEWIS, Rifle Bde.; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902, impressed named to 6550 PTE. W. LEWIS. RIFLE BRIGADE.; British War and Victory Medals, both impressed named to 016051 PTE. W. LEWIS. A.O.C. A couple of small edge knocks to first two medals, with all four being court mounted for display on card.

Sergeant William Lewis was born in Bath, Somerset, and ‘was a veteran of the South African and First World wars. As a member of the regular army, in which he held the rank of Sergeant, serving in India and Egypt before fighting with the 1st & 2nd Battalions of The Rifle Corps in South Africa (campaign bars confirmed for service).

He was recalled to the British Army at the beginning of the First World War, and served in France as a sergeant with both the 23rd Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers (4th Tyneside Scottish) & Army Ordnance Corps. He is listed as having been awarded the Silver War Badge. Possible wounds may have resulted in his transfer to the A.O.C. After his discharge in June 1919 (K.R. 392 Para XVIII – At his own request after 18 years service), he worked for 30 years at the old Clevedon Brickworks in Strode Road.

A prominent member of the Buffalos, in which he held the rank of R.O.H., Mr Lewis was at one time the hon. secretary of the old Prince of Wales Lodge, Clevedon. He is noted as residing at 6 Lower Queen’s Road, Clevedon.

He was a member of the British Legion and the Clevedon Liberal Club (copy of newspaper obituary dated from 1962 refers, showing a very large number of named attendees at the funeral).
