Description

Offered is an original British Army Afghanistan 1878-1880 Campaign Medal, as awarded to Private James Moran, who served in the 2/14th Regiment of Foot during the campaign.

Features a 36mm wide circular silver medal with swivel ribbon suspension bar; the face with the veiled crowned head and shoulders of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed ‘VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX (Victoria Queen and Empress); the reverse with a column on the march in a mountainous landscape, an elephant bearing a cannon to the fore, circumscribed above ‘AFGHANISTAN’ and dated ‘1878-79-80’ below; correct chisseled named 10B/1051. PTE. J. MORAN. 2/14TH. FOOT’; on correct ribbon. Comes with copied Battalion rolls, medal rolls etc.

James Moran was born in Grimsby, Lancashire in 1852 and served with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Regiment of Foot (West Yorkshire Regiment) in the 1st Afghanistan Campaign from November 1878 until October 1880, noted as being in hospital May to June 1880.

The Medal was instituted on 19 March 1881 to be awarded to participants in the Second Afghan War of 1878 to 1880.
