Description
Offered is a British Army medal group, as awarded to 14015 Gunner W Jones, who served on the Western Front in 1914 and was court martialled after he he re-enlisted in 1916, having been convicted and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment as a result of being A.W.O.L. for 2.5 months.
Medals include the following awards: 1914 Star with original ‘Mons’ clasp, being impressed named 14015 GNR: W. JONES. R.G.A.; War Medal & Victory Medal being impressed named 14015 GNR. W. JONES. R.A. Court mounted for display. Comes with a copy of his ‘burnt’ service record.
William Jones
was born in Neath, Wales in 1883 and had previously served with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Welsh Regiment before enlisting 29/1/1903 for full time service into the Royal Garrison Artillery. He served during the First World War with 26th Heavy Battery, R.G.A. in France from 16/8/1914 to 16/1/1916. Based at Fareham, Hampshire, prior to mobilisation, the Battery was attached to 1 Division and landed at Boulogne from where it assisted in an attempt to halt the German Army during the retreat to the Marne. He was disacharged 22/1/1916 having served 13 years and 3 months with the colours. He re-enlisted (Regimental # 284680) in September 1916, aged 33, being paid a re enlistment bounty of 20 GBP and employed with the 305th Siege Battery, where he was noted as being A.W.O.L. from 11/12/1916 to 6/2/1918, for this he was court martialled and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment (suspended) 20/3/1918. He served with the ‘B.E.F.’ from 5/4/1917 to 23/1/1919. Discharged March 1919, aged 36. He received his 1914 Star 10/7/1919 & BWM /Victory medals in December 1920.
