Offered is a 'Old Contemptable' Distinguished Conduct Medal group of 8 to Captain Lombard, Martitime Artillery, late Army Service Corps.

He served Somalia (1908-10 Campaign), WW1 landing in France 12/8/1914. Commissioned for WW2 into the 5th Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery.

The medals are court mounted for display. It would appear that they have been silver coated and lacquered at some stage, as was common at the period. Comes with copied medal rolls, medal index cards, London Gazette 1910, 1916, 1945. Census 1901 & 1911, photograph of his grave 1945.

Charles William Henry Lumbard was born 1884 Barton, Gloucestershire. He is recorded on the 1901 Census as a commercial clerk. His service records are not available on line and are possibly held by the MOD due to being commissioned in 1939.

It is probable that he enlisted early 1900’s as he is recorded as a Second Corporal in the Somalia lists of 1911.

He enlisted into the Army Service Corps and served in Somalia 1908-10. This campaign was against the rebels led by Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, nicknamed the 'Mad Mullah' by the British. From the medal list, only 20 bars were issued to enlisted & NCO's of the Army Service Corps for this campaign.

He landed in France 12/8/1914 as a Serjeant with the 27th Depot Unit of Supplies. He was awarded the  D.C.M. London Gazette 14 January 1916 (citation published 11 March 1916): ‘For conspicuous good work as Chief Clerk in the office of the Assistant Director of Supplies. He has always displayed great zeal and efficiency and a marked devotion to duty.’ His long service and good conduct medal was granted when he was a Staff Sergeant. The 'Freemason list' for Singapore in 1920 gives his rank as S. Serjeant Major RASC.

He was granted an emergency commission in September 1939, serving with the 5th Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery and was discharged from the Army as a Captain 23rd November 1945 as he exceeded the age limit. He died shortly afterward, on the 13th December 1945 and is buried Burtree Ford Cemetery, Cowshill, Durham.

Overall, a nice DCM group, with the addition of a rather scarce campaign bar for the A.S.C. and further commissioned service during WW2 to this odl war horse.

The 5th Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery manned light anti-aircraft weapons on merchant shipping. The HQ was at Shoeburyness and was designated to protect shipping on the Thames.
