The 1st Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders served in South Africa, Ceylon and Hong Kong. They returned to the UK in 1892 before taking part in the Boer War in 1899 – 1902. They were joined in South Africa by the Reserve Battalion, the 3rd and 4th Battalions as well as the Volunteer Companies.

Clasp Cape Colony was issued to all troops in Cape Colony at any time between 11th October 1899 and 31s May 1902.

Clasp  South Africa 1902 was awarded for those not entitled to the Kings Medal though they had served at the front between 1st January and 31st May 1902.
