Charles McGregor was born 1897 in Rannagulzion, Perth, Scotland. Occupation Gardner. Previous service 5^th Volunteer Battalion Royal Highlanders. Enlisted with the regular forces 1^st Battalion HLI Perth 6/12/1900.

Home service 6/12/200- 19/08/01.

South Africa. 20/08/01 -11/01/1903 with the 1^st Battalion HLI

Egypt 12/01/2003.

Discharged 20/4/1903.

He is listed in the book “A military History of Perthshire” 1899-1902.

7391, Pte. McGregor, Charles (Rannagahion). Enlisted 1900. Served in South African War, 1901-1902 (Queen’s medal, with clasps “Cape Colony,” “South Africa, 1901,” and “South Africa, 1902 “), being discharged 1903.

The Boer War 1899-1902 saw 1st H.L.I. take part in the battles of Belmont (1899), Modder River (1899) and Magersfontein (1899), and numerous other engagements. In 1903 1st H.L.I. left South Africa for Egypt (1903-1904)

Following heavy British losses in the early part of the Second Boer War in 1899, many of the militia battalions were embodied for active service.
