The medal was established by the United Nations on 12 December 1950, the first international award of its kind, to be awarded to the members of the multi-national forces who participated in the Korean War between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1954. The Netherlands asked exceptionally for this to extended to 1 January 1955 for Dutch forces.
