*SNIPER* WW1 AUSTRALIAN DIED OF WOUNDS WAR MEDAL 6410 AUGUST PETERSON 26TH BN
Offered is a British War Medal, impressed named 6410 PTE A. R. PETERSON. 26 BN. A.I.F. August Rosemus Peterson had previously served 1st Australian Light Horse (Kingaroy), 11/3/1917 allotted to the 26th Bn. Attended 2nd Army sniping school 1/9/1917. Gassed 17/11/1917 (Belgium), 25/5/1918, wounded as a result of a gas shell, wounding him in his abdomen & left hip (Grandvilliers, France), transferred through the casualty clearing stations and transferred to England for surgery/hospitalised. Died King George Hospital London (Intestinal Obstruction) 27/9/1918. Buried Brookwood Cemetery 1/10/1918, where he was given a military funeral, with a firing party, bugler & pall bearers in attendance. He was buried in a ‘polished elm’ coffin, with the Australian flag draped over him, to which the last post was played. His medical record gives a summary of the very painful death that Peterson suffered.
