George Banks was born in 1850 at Woolton, a labourer by trade he enlisted with the 64th Regiment of Foot (2nd Staffordshire) at Liverpool on the 26th January 1869 and received a 1 pound bounty. He was illiterate and his service records shows an X for his signature. On the 15th July 1870 he transferred to the 89th Regiment of Foot (Princess Victoria's Royal Irish Fusiliers) for the remainder of his service, this was probably due to the fact the 89th was deploying to India where he served for 13 years.
His service consisted of: Home 28/1/1869 – 29/9/1870. East indies 30/9/70 – 18/2/1884 (Rangoon Burma 1876 - 80) Re- engaged 7/2/1877, Sudan 19/2/1884 – 20/4/1884. Home 21/4/84 – 31/1/90, promoted to L/Cpl 5/1/1884 & Cpl 1/12/86.
