Description
Queens South Africa Medal to Civilian Surgeon H. Meggitt, who served in the Boer War attached as a civilian surgeon with the 1st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He further served during WW1 as a Major with the R.A.M.C.
Queens South Africa Medal 1899 – 1902 with 4 clasps, CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1901. Engraved named Civ. Surgn: H. MEGGITT. Comes with copies of medal rolls, Army lists, national census, newspaper articles and research.
Major Herbert Meggitt was born in 1868 at Lincoln, England. He was named in a bankruptcy procedure (Creditor)1888 -1890 as a Surgeon practising in Surrey. He served in the Boer War attached to the 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a civilian surgeon according to the medal roll. The 1st Bn R.W.F. landed in South Africa 13/11/1899 and a passenger list shows that Civil Surgeon H Meggitt departure Durban, South Africa and arrived 6/12/1902 Southampton on the Carisbrook Castle. It would appear from the roll that he should also have the clasp South Africa 1902. He appears in the London Gazette as follows. 4/12/1904 Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars). Herbert Meggitt Gent to be extra Surgeon Lieutenant under para 30, Yeomanry Regulations. 20/10/1908 Officers from the Imperial Yeomanry, are appointed to the corps, in the rank stated with precedence in the Imperial Yeomanry dated 1st April 1908: Surgeon Lieutenant Herbert Meggitt from the Middlesex (Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars) Imperial yeomanry. 6/10/1911 Captain Herbert Meggitt resigns his commission dated 7/10/1911. The 1911 census records him as living in Hampstead and practicing from his home address, he was also married to Ellie (16 years younger). LG: 10/5/1912 Herbert Meggitt (late Captain, Royal army Medical Corps [Territorial Force]) to be Captain dated 25th March 1912. The Army list 1912 1st (City of London) Battalion the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) Meggitt, Capt H R.A.M.C. (T.F) (attd) 25 Mar.12. WW1 Captain Meggitt deployed to Malta, landing September 1914. He is also entitled to the British War Medal 1914-18 but not the Victory. The LG 8/6/1917: Capt H. Meggitt to be Maj. 13th May 1917. LG 29/7/1921 having attained the age limit retired 30th July 1921: Maj. H.Meggitt, and retains the rank of Major.
