The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Civil Division, Knight Commander`s (K.C.B.) set of insignia, including neck order & breast badge in case of issue by Toye, Kenning & Spencer LTD of London.

The neck order features a 55mm high, oval silver-gilt skeletal badge with scroll and loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a sceptre centrally from which issue a rose (for England), a thistle (for Scotland) and a shamrock (for Ireland), gilt crowns above and to left and right, within a ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO’ (three joined in one); the reverse identical, with full length neck ribbon. The breast badge measures 78mm wide, of silver, gilt and enamel, with silver retaining pin & hook, extremely fine condition, with spotless enamel and exceptionally fine cut silver details. Both pieces are housed in the gilt embossed & maker marked award case. This set dating from about the 1990’s. Scarce.

The Order was instituted by King George I on 18 May 1725 and restructured in 1815 when the numbers of members increased and again in 1847 when a civil division was added. Membership is limited to citizens of the United Kingdom and of other Commonwealth countries of which the monarch is sovereign, though honorary awards may be made to prominent foreigners.

The statutes limit membership (other than honorary awards to foreigners) to 120 Knights or Dames Grand Cross (G.C.B.), 355 Knights Commander (K.C.B.) or Dames Commander (D.C.B.) and 1,925 Companions (C.B.). Appointments to Membership the Civil Division are made to those who ‘by their personal services to [the] crown or by the performance of public duties have merited ... royal favour’. In practice this usually means very senior civil servants, such as permanent secretaries, from ministries other than the Foreign Office.
