John Richard Maddocks, was born in 1887 at Wolverhampton, Stafford, a butcher by trade he enlisted in Birmingham 20/11/1905 with the Worcestershire Regiment. John Richard Maddocks, was born in 1887 at Wolverhampton, Stafford, a butcher by trade he enlisted in Birmingham 20/11/1905 with the Worcestershire Regiment. He initially served with the 3rd Battalion until transferring to the 4th Battalion on the 30/11/06 to serve in Malta 30/11/06 – 11/11/08 and then India 12/11/08 – 8/11/12, qualifying in telegraphy at Lucknow 1910.
In November 1911 the accession of the King-Emperor (King George V) and his Consort was proclaimed in his presence at the great Durbar, which inaugurated the new capital at Delhi. The 4th Battalion from Bareilly Garrison were included in the massive force of the British Army, which assembled at Delhi for the parade. L/Cpl Maddocks returned to England transferring to the reserve 13/11/13.
5/8/14 he was recalled to the colours to serve with the 3rd Battalion, landing in France on the 12/8/1914. The Battalion was part of the 7th Brigade 3rd Division. It was in action at Mons and Le Cateau etc. By the winter of 14-15 the 3rd Battalion was manning the trenches of the Ypres Salient.
In January 1915 the Battalion was rotating through the lines at East Kemmel and suffering a steady drain in men killed and wounded. (7 killed and 19 wounded for the month) on the 13th L/Cpl Maddocks was killed in action. He is buried at Kemmel Chateau military cemetery.
Also entitled to the British War and Victory Medal and probably the Delhi Durbar Medal.
