Offered is a Queens South Africa Medal (1899 – 1902) with 2 clasp, CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, impressed named 1510 PTE J. CAREY. VICTORIAN M.R. Comes with copy history 5th Mounted Contingent, extracts from roll and newspaper article. Private James Carey from Lancefield, Victoria served as a ‘saddler’ with the 5th contingent Victorian Mounted Rifles. He was reported as dangerously ill with enteric fever at Charleston on 30/10/1901. The contingent left Australia on 15/2/1901 with 46 officers and 971 other ranks. 6 officers and 48 O.R’s were killed or died on the campaign. Each of the eight companies had 3 saddlers on strength.
