SCARCE WW1 SOUTH AFRICAN MERCANTILE MARINE BRITISH WAR MEDAL INGVALD RUSTHOI
$97.00
SOLD
Offered is a British War Medal (1914 – 18) impressed named I. RUSTHOI, comes with copies of: research, South African Mercantile Marine Medal roll and Freemason’s book extract.
Also entitled to the Mercantile Marine War Medal, his British War Medal is apparently one of just 47 awarded to South Africans, from a roll compiled in November 1986, making this a scarce piece.
Ingvald Rusthoi was born in Sweden on 22 December 1883. He lived in Cambridge Street, East London, Cape Province and served in the Mercantile Marine during the Great War. His Freemason Lodge book entry shows he joined the Concordia Lodge, East London 25/10/1916 and was an engineer by trade. His medal card shows ‘clasp 1918’ so it would be fair to assume that he was serving only in 1918.
Ingvald died on 22 Dec 1964 in South Africa and is buried in the Old Cemetery, Strand, Cape Town.
