Chief Stoker George Danby was born on 22/1/1881 at Hull, Yorkshire. A small man at 5’2” he was working as a farm servant when he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 5/12/1899 as a stoker (gave a false date of birth as 22/1/1880 when he enlisted). He progressed steadily through the ranks to Chief Stoker by 1916.

He served on a variety of H.M ship and shore bases including: Blenheim (Blake-class cruiser), Pembroke II, Pembroke I, Adventure (scout cruiser), Topaze (Gem class cruiser), Andromache (mine layer), Newcastle (Town class light cruiser) and was on board for the 1911 census in Hong Kong. Gibraltar, Tyne (troop ship).

WW1: Tyne (depot ship for H.M.S Flying Fish a C Class destroyer) 19/5/1914 – 13/10/15, attached to the Grand Fleet.

H.M.S. Victory 1916 - 1919: Accounting bases, parent ships and barracks. Although men were on the books of the various VICTORYs, they were not necessarily physically present, they were actually serving in (mainly small) ships and VICTORY provided pay, administration and parenting services.

Post-war: Hercules (Colossus-class dreadnought) New Zealand (Indefatigable-class battle cruiser) 21/7/1921 – 4/12/1921.

Discharged to shore pension 14/11/1921.
