INDIA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL HAZARA 1891 1215 COSTELLO R WELSH FUSILIERS PRE WW1

Offered is an India General Service Medal (1854 – 95), with clasp HAZARA 1891, period engraved 1215 Pte W. COSTELLO 1^ST B^N R. W. Fus. Comes with copy extracts from the: Regimental Occurrence Book, medal rolls and embarkation roll.

Private W. Costello service records have not been located as of this date, however it is known that he served with the 1^st Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1891 – 1893 as his name regularly in the Regimental Occurrence book, once for a good conduct prize, 10 times for fines, twice for periods of imprisonment with hard labour and once for a Regimental Court Martial for ‘1) Breaking out of barracks, 2) Absenting himself without leave’, receiving another 14 days imprisonment with hard labour. At the Time the 1^st Battalion R.W.F was stationed in India.

He participated in the Hazara expedition 1891 and was awarded the India General Service Medal with clasp Hazara 1891. He was probably time expired when he was recalled to the Colours from the reserve depot on 3/2/1900 and embarked for South Africa on 10/2/1900.

He is further entitled to the Queens South Africa Medal (1899 – 1902) with 3 clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal. Also the Kings South Africa Medal (1902) with 2 clasps South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. The South Africa medal rolls dated March 1903 shows that Pte Costello has discharged by that date.
