Offered is an original WW1 era German 98/05 Mauser 'Butcher' bayonet & scabbard by Erfurt, with rare retailer mark for Ferdinand of Elberfeld.
Bayonet features steel fittings overall, with waffen stamps to birds head pommel with working external release button, screw-in wooden grips and metal guard & partial muzzle ring. The 36.5 cm long swollen steel blade shows some field sharpening to blade edge, retaining sharpened spear point, with blade being in generally good condition overall, with some age spotting to left ricasso. Ricasso maker stamped for Erfurtof Solingen, with Prussian issue stamp and date for 1915 issue. The opposite ricasso shows the rarely seen retailer stamp of Ferdinand, Esser & Co. Elberfeld.
Standard metal scabbard with Waffen stamp to throat, in good original shape, showing some dents, wear and worn finish. Blade fits very nicely into the scabbard. Overall length: 52cm.
The bayonet was designed for use with the 7.92 mm Gewehr 98 bolt action Mauser Rifle, being one of the main service rifles of the German Army pre and post-WW1.
