Petty Officer John Park Hall, was born on the 18/5/1897 in Norwich, he was working as a gardener when he enlisted into the Royal Navy 18/5/1913. He served on a variety of H.M. ship and shore installations including: Ganges, Grafton (Edgar class cruiser), Pembroke I.
WW1: Implacable (Formidable-class battleship) 26/8/1914 - 18/4/1916.
Gallipoli action off X Beach: Late on 24 April. Having crept in, Implacable started sending men ashore at 0400hrs, under cover of a bombardment. In the course of the bombardment, she fired 20 x 12" shells and 368 x 6" shells. The landing beach was subsequently named 'Implacable Beach.'
Over the course of the following days, Implacable continued to bombard Ottoman positions around the landing beaches. As Ottoman forces began to gather at Krithia to launch a counterattack against Y Beach on 26 April, Implacable opened a heavy bombardment that completely dispersed the enemy. Two days later, she was again off X Beach, bombarding troop concentrations during the First Battle of Krithia. She helped to break up an Ottoman attack on Y Beach on the night of 1 May and supported an unsuccessful British and ANZAC attack on Krithia five days later, the Second Battle of Krithia. Also served in the Adriatic Sea and Salonika Campaign.
Courageous (Courageous class battlecruiser) 4/11/1916 - 29/5/1918. The Second Battle of Heligoland Bight, she fired 92 x 15" shells and 180 x 4" shells.
Post war served on: Prince George (majestic class battle ship), Moth (insect class gun boat) Royal Oak (battleship), Ark Royal (aircraft carrier), Dunedin (Cruiser), Titania (submarine depot ship), Egmont & St Angelo (Malta), Caledonia (cadet training ship).
Discharged to pension 17/5/1937. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal 22/5/1930 and the 1937 Coronation Medal.
During WW2 he was recalled 5/12/39 & served on Pembroke & Cochrane. Discharged invalided 5/12/1943.
