Colour Sergeant William Black?was born in Glasgow, about 1823. A grinder by trade (knife?) He enlisted into the 63rd?Regiment of Foot (service No 1764) at Glasgow on the 19/9/1841. He served with the 63rd?until transferring to the 51st?on the 1/1/1847 (service No 2049). He was promoted to Corporal 23/1/1856, Sargent 10/3/1857. However, after overstaying his leave 1/9/57 ? 2/9/57, he was reduced to Private and imprisoned 3 – 4/9/57....

Colour Sergeant William Black?was born in Glasgow, about 1823. A grinder by trade (knife?) He enlisted into the 63rd?Regiment of Foot (service No 1764) at Glasgow on the 19/9/1841. He served with the 63rd?until transferring to the 51st?on the 1/1/1847 (service No 2049).

He was promoted to Corporal 23/1/1856, Sargent 10/3/1857. However, after overstaying his leave 1/9/57 ? 2/9/57, he was reduced to Private and imprisoned 3 - 4/9/57.

Promoted Corporal 13/2/1860, Sergeant 18/4/1860 and Colour Sergeant 13/7/1861. He was invalided out on the 1/9/1863 after serving 21 years and 79 days. Overseas service included 10 months at Malta and 16 years, 2 months in India.

The Battalion moved on to India in 1846. From there it was deployed to Burma and saw action at Pegu in 1852 during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. Although it returned to England in 1854, it was deployed to India again in 1857 to help suppress the Indian Rebellion and was still in India for the Ambela Campaign in 1863.
