Description

Offered is a Boer War campaign medal to Robert Moody, formerly of Castlemaine, Victoria, who served in South Africa with the 8th New Zealand Contingent (A Squadron, North Island Regiment)

Queens South Africa Medal (1899 – 1902), with 3 clasps CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1902, impressed named 5096 TPR. R. MOODY. 8-N.Z. M.RIF. Comes with copy enlistment papers and medal roll.

Trooper Robert Moody enlisted with the 8^th New Zealand Contingent (A Squadron, North Island Regiment) on the 5/1/1902 at Trentham, New Zealand. A labourer by trade, his address was given as Lower Hutt, Wellington however his next of kin was recorded as his father Robert John Moody whose address was Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia.

The 8th contingent sailed in two columns, the first from the north island on 29th January 1902, and second from the South Island on 8th February, so that they saw comparatively short war service sailing for home July 1902.

His medals were posted to him at the ‘Sporting Club Hotel’, Castlemaine, Victoria, however they were returned unclaimed in 1904. On the 5/5/1937 Robert wrote to the N.Z. Minister of Defence requesting his medals, his address was recorded as C/O – British Empire Service League Branch and Club, Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia.
