PRE WW1 BOER WAR AND LONG SERVICE MEDALS JOHNSON 18TH HUSSARS COMMANDING OFFICER’S GROOM
Offered is a Queens South Africa Medal (1899 – 1902), 1 clasp CAPE COLONY, period engraved named 3633 Pte R. JOHNSON. 18/Hrs.; Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (E.VII.), impressed named 3633 PTE R. JOHNSON. 18/HRS. Court mounted for display. Comes with copies service papers and medal roll. LS & GC with gratuity October 1908 Robert Johnston was born in 1872 at St Stephens, Dublin. A wheeler by trade, he enlisted into the 18th Hussars (service number 3633) on the 13/2/1890 at Dublin. He served his entire 27 years with the 18th Hussars and discharged 4/5/1917, his enlistment service time having expired. Apart from his home service, he served in India 23/1/1892 – 14/10/1898 & South Africa 15/10/1898 – 31/5/1900. His character record states: ‘I have personally known this man for many years. Steady, sober and exemplary character. He has been continually employed as an officers groom and knows his work and does it’. Signed Lt. Colonel, 18th Hussars. On leaving the service he was employed as a groom at Royal Military College Sandhurst. At the outbreak of the Great War he was stationed with the Reserve Cavalry Regiment when he was mobilized 15/8/1914 at Tidsworth.
