Harold Egbert Smith was born 21/7/1895, he enlisted into the Royal Engineers 5/8/1913 and was given the service number 24947. He landed in France 5/10/1914 with the 55th Field Company, Royal Engineers, who were stationed in South Africa when the war started. They were assigned to the 7th Division, who landed at Zeebrugge in the first week of October 1914, ordered to assist in the defence of Antwerp. They moved to the Guards Division in September 1915.

At some stage he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and spine and also developed Neurasthenia (shell shock) and is entitled to the Silver War Badge (RE/3803). He was medically discharged 14/2/1919 with a 40% disability pension, but survived until April 1972 when he died in Hendon.
