WW1 MEDALS KILLED IN ACTION YPRES 1917 H HAGGER SHERWOOD FORESTERS NEUVE CHAPELE

Offered is a set of three medals to Private. H. Hagger, 16th Battalion (Chatsworth Rifles), Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), a pre-war regular who was tragically killed in action on 1 July 1917

Henry Hagger was born in Nottingham and was a pre war regular serving with the 1^st Battalion Notts and Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment. It is believed that he joined in 1907 – 1908 as his service number was 10441. 10241 was issued 15/1/1907 and 10730 joined 7/4/1908. The Battalion was stationed in Bombay, India at the outbreak of the war and returned to England, landing 2/10/ 1914. They became part of the 24^th Brigade, 8^th Division.

Hagger landed in France with the Battalion 4/11/1914, he was transferred to the 2^nd Battalion at an unknown date, possibly after Neuve Chapelle when he was wounded. He was again transferred (unknown date) to the 16^th Battalion with whom he was serving when he was killed. The 16^th Battalion was formed in April 1915 and landed in France 6/3/1916.

In June 1917, the Battalion was in the Ypres sector. From the 24^th June until the night of 30^th/1^st they were holding the front line in the Hill Top sector. They were under constant shell fire from 5.9’s, 4.2’s, heavy Minenwerfers and trench mortars. The battalion lost 3 killed and 58 wounded in the week that they were there. On the night of the 30^th/1^st 2 men were killed (Hagger being one) and another 2 wounded during the relief. The war diary makes for grim reading.

He is buried in the Brandhoek Military Cemetery.
