Offered is a 1914 – 15 Star, impressed named S.LT. R. MAC LAUGHLAN. R.N.V.R.; British War and Victory Medals (1914 – 18), impressed named LIEUT. R. MACLAUGHLAN. R.N.V.R. Court mounted for display and comes with copies of officer’s service record, naval lists and medal roll.

Lieutenant Richard John Maclaughlan could speak Greek, French, Italian and Turkish, and would appear to have already been ‘in country’ as his records show 'Is permanent agent at Castro, Lemnos'. His commission was given by the V.A.C. E. Med Sq (Vice Admiral Commanding Eastern Mediterranean Squadron) to facilitate dealing with the Military Authorities, an expedited rank, possibly out of haste due to the urgent need of his linguistic/territorial skills.

He is listed as serving in the Europa (the flagship at Mudros July 1915 – 1919) being commissioned as a temporary Honorary Sub Lieutenant 25/12/1915, promoted to temporary Honorary Lieutenant 25/12/1916. He remained stationed at Castro until relieved 24/6/1918. He was seconded to Lieutenant Colonel Huntingford at Corfu as a Liaison & Intelligence Officer 23/7/1918. He was posted to H.M.S. President 27/11/1918 'pending demobilising', which occurred 7/6/1919. His discharge postal address being Lancaster House, Millon, Cumberland.

A very interesting group, worthy of further research.
