Volunteer Officers' Decoration (1892) with VR cypher, as issued to British volunteer officers. The medal consists of a 45mm high silver oval oak wreath tied in gold. In the centre is the Royal cypher surmounted by an Imperial Crown, both in gold. The medal is suspended from a green ribbon by a silver ring. The ribbon has a silver bar brooch with an oak leaf pattern. The reverse of the medal bears London hallmarks for the year 1897. Comes in the fitted R & S Garrard & CO. purple velvet lined award case, showing outer wear to base.

This decoration was instituted in July 1892 for the purpose of rewarding 'efficient and capable' officers of the Volunteer Force who had served for twenty years. In 1894 the decoration was introduced for officers of Volunteer Forces in India and the Colonies (although in the case of India the length of qualifying service was reduced to eighteen years). Medals issued to British volunteer officers bore a 'VR' cypher in the centre, while those issued to Indian and Colonial officers bore a 'VRI' cypher. Colonial and Indian officers were issued with different volunteer decorations from May 1899.
