Offered is an original WW2 Immediate combat M.M. medal group, as awarded to Sgt. William Arthur Miller, of the Special Service Battalion. The group includes a display court mounted group of 5 medals, including:
GeoVI Military Medal, named in impressed capitals to: SR. 597779 V. SJT. W. A. MILLER. S.B.S.
1939-45 Star, The Italy Star, 1939-45 War Medal & African Service Medal (all un-named as issued-standard for Rhodesian Volunteers).

The medals come with a copied service record, showing Miller was originally from Glasgow, Scotland, was an engineer by trade and enlisted on the 1st December 1942 at Pietermaritzburg, South Africa aged 37. He had formerly served with the Engineers in Southern Rhodesia. He served with the Special Service Battalion, which in 1942 was converted to an armoured car commando unit. Miller was part of this unit in Italy, when on the 22nd April 1945 he was awarded the Military Medal (Immediate recommendation) for combat bravery, his citation reading:

During the advance on San Decima on 22nd April 1945 Sjt Miller took command of his troop after his troop commander was wounded, when the advance of his squadron was held up by the loss of three tanks knocked out by a well concealed enemy tank.
Under heavy shell and spandau fire Sjt Miller went forward on foot to reconnoitre and discover the enemy tank and an A/T gun, and then with great skill led his troop into position, knocked out the tank and A/T gun thus enabling the advance to continue.
During the period Sjt Miller led the troop well and bravely, and was subsequently responsible for the destruction of much enemy equipment'.

The M.M. was recommended for Miller on the 1st May 1945, with the recommendation passing the Army level on the 13th May 1945.
Miller was one of 37 Rhodesians to win an M.M. during WW2, with only 4 whilst serving with the S.S.B. A rare combat immediate award
He was discharged on the 14th September 1946 in Pretoria, South Africa.
