Herbert John Brogden was born on 26/11/1910 at Gympie, Queensland. A truck driver by trade he enlisted into the Australian Army on 25/8/1942 at Bundaberg, Queensland with the service # 144671, however he was discharged on 12/11/1942 to join the Royal Australian Navy with the new service # B/P.108.

After initial training he was posted to the H.M.A.S. Gladstone from 1/7/1943 – 26/9/1944. The Gladstone was an Australian Minesweeper (corvette) serving in Australian and New Guinea waters. He discharged 25/9/1944 on medical grounds, he died on 8/10/1971
