37mm wide circular silver medal on claw and fixed suspension bar with ‘MINESWEEPING 1945-51’ clasp (awarded for 6 months service on minesweeping duties). The face with the crowned head of King George VI facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIVS VI G BR. OMN REX ET INDIAE IMP:’ (George VI King of Great Britain and Emperor of India); the reverse with the full-length figure of Britannia and two sea horses traversing the sea from right to left on original ribbon. Named in impressed capitals to: P/SSX 769051 D. J. LUCAS A B R N.
The Naval General Service Medal 1915-62 was instituted in 1915 for service in minor Naval war-like operations. The medal is always issued with a clasp denoting the area of operations. Subsequent service is recognised by the award of further clasps to be worn on the original medal.
