For sale is an India Medal (1849 – 95), with clasp PEGU, named HY LOCK A.B. WINCHESTER. It comes with copies of service records. Chief Boatswain Henry Lock was born in Long Parish, Hants on 4/8/1830. He entered service in the Royal Navy as a 14-year-old Boy 2nd Class on 1/1/1845 using a false name of John Lock. Over the next 32 years he served on a variety of H.M. ships and Coastguard vessels, including H.M.S. Winchester (60-gun Southampton-class sailing frigate) from 1/4/1852 – 14/5/1857, it was in 1856 that he revealed his true name of Henry. The Winchester served on the coast of Burma during the Second Burmese War 1852 -53 and he qualified for the medal and clasp. He also served on her during the Second Opium War, when her boats and some of her ship’s company were used in the attack on Canton 1857 qualifying for the China Medal with clasp Canton. He retired from the Coast Guard in October 1883.
