Colonial Auxiliary Forces Decoration, EDVII, retaining a good amount of gilt finish to royal cypher & crown, on mounted ribbon, with silver pin back bar. Hallmarked for Sebastian Garrard, London,1903 .925 Silver. Chisel engraved to rear, CAPTAIN W. H. OSBORNE William Henry Osborne was born in 1865 in Ballarat, Victoria, his father, William, was 28 and his mother, Annie, was 23. He had three brothers and six sisters. He died in 1948 in Warragul, Victoria, at the age of 83. Quoted from a Victorian Newspaper of the day: “Another attendee at meeting was Boam’s replacement as DRAC, Major William Henry Osborne. Osborne was a Captain of Engineers and had commanded No.2 Submarine Mining Company in Melbourne before his promotion to Major. It is not clear what particular qualifications Osborne held to be given the role, but it perhaps the fact that this did not seem to matter was an indication of how little importance the Defence Department attached to the position and to the rifle club movement in general”.
