First World War British War & Victory medal, to Zacharia Coles, who was killed during the Second World War in a German bombing raid, in which his pub took a direct hit. Medals are impressed named to Z. W. COLES. B. R. C. & ST. J. J. (British Red Cross & St. John of Jerusalem), display court mounted. Zachariah William Coles was a long serving member of the B.R.C.S. in both World Wars. A member of the Kent Home Guard he was the licensee of the Running Horses public house in Erith, Kent. He was killed instantly when the pub was hit during a bombing raid on 29 November 1940. Those who were killed inside the pub were apparently untouched from the blast, but died from the shock waves from the explosion. Zacharia’s wife, survived, having been serving drinks at the rear of the pub. Sold with copied research.
