61st Regiment of Foot Indian Mutiny Medal Pte Burton fought Punjab War Army

For sale is a Mutiny Medal with clasp DELHI, named DAVID BURTON. H.M. 61ST REGT. It comes with copies of service records and medal rolls. David Burton was born in Parndon, Essex about 1825. A labourer by trade he enlisted into the 95th Regiment of Foot (service #1498) on 21/12/1842. He transferred to the 61st Regiment of Foot on 1/7/1844 (service #2105), with who he served until discharge on 16/5/1865 after some 22 years’ service of which 13 were in India. The 61st were stationed in England and Ireland from 1840 to 1845. In 1845 they moved to India and fought in the Second Anglo-Sikh War of 1848–49. They were at the Battle of Ramnagar (November 1848), Saddalupar and Chillianwala (December 1848-January 1849) and Gujrat (February 1849). The regiment was still in India when Indian Rebellion of 1857 broke out. They took part in the Siege of Delhi and returned to England in 1860. A lucky man he survived the rigours of the Punjab Campaign, Mutiny and 13 years’ service in India where death from disease and climate was never far off.
