Private Frederick George Hall was a pre-war Territorial serving with the 7th Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment. He was mobilised for the Great War and in August 1914 the unit was in Bournemouth, being part of Hampshire Brigade, The Wessex Division.

The Wessex Division was asked to go out to India to replace the regulars usually on duty there and perform their duties for them. Not only did this help them to complete war training but it also gave them a well-deserved opportunity by taking on a valuable duty. The Wessex Division was incredibly quick to form its ‘Foreign Service’ units and on 26/9/1914, it was declared that it would serve in India, with Hampshire Battalions following on the 9th October.

In total, seven Hampshire Battalions joined the forces in India. Of these included were 1/4th, 1/5th, 1/6th and 1/7th Hampshire Battalions. These Battalions would help to replace the Regulars already on duty in India. This would involve duties such as Garrison duty, whilst also acting as a police force.

On the 9/10/1914 Hall sailed for India, landing at Karachi on 11//11/1914. The battalion remained in India until January 1918, when the Battalion moved to Aden. He survived his tour of duty in India and would have seen active service on the frontier to qualify for the Victory Medal. He was demobilised on 21/3/1919.

He received a new service # 305375 in 1917 when the Territorial forces were renumbered.
