Alfred Edward Cundill was born in Natal on 28/4/1865. During the Boer War he served with the Kimberly Town Guard during the siege.

The Kimberley Town Guard was raised in October 1899 to defend the city from the possibility of Boer attack. During the siege there were very many skirmishes and sorties in which the mounted men did most of the fighting, while the infantry, including the Town Guard, held the trenches and defensive works.  He survived the battle and in 1918 he was living in British Bechuanaland. He died 31/1/1953 and is buried in Settlers' Cemetery, East Bank, Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
