36mm wide circular silver medal with ornate scrolled swivel ribbon suspension; the face with the crowned head of Queen Victoria facing left, circumscribed ‘VICTORIA REGINA’ and signed ‘W. WYON. R.A.’ (for William Wyon, R.A., 1795-1851, chief engraver at the Royal Mint from 1828 to 1851); the reverse with a a crouching lion on a plinth in front of a protea bush with a single flower. The medal is inscribed “SOUTH AFRICA” around the top perimeter and has the year “1853” in the exergue. The name of engraver L.C. Wyon is inscribed at the bottom, below the year. The edge shows some light edge knocks and scratches, with correct impressed name to J. WOODROW. 91ST REGT. On correct ribbon with collectors catalogue sticker.
