John Castle was born in 1865 at Huddersfield, Yorkshire. A labourer by trade he enlisted into the Militia with the 4th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers 21/3/1892. He was embodied to serve with the 1st Battalion R.W.F. on 11/5/1900, embarking on 26/5/1900 with a draft to reinforce the Battalion in South Africa. He served with them until 29/9/1901. On returning to England, he re-joined the 4th Battalion R.W.F. staying with them until they were disbanded on 15/8/1908, when he transferred to the 3rd Battalion. He was struck off the strength of the unit on his death on 14/12/1908.

The R.W.F. had a very good reputation during their service in the Boer War.
