FRENCH ARMY 1845 1855 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICERS SWORD & SCABBARD
$900.00
SOLD
***SOLD***
Offered is an 1845/1855 Pattern French Army Officer's sword, as worn by an Infantry Officer.
The sword features a diagonally ribbed ebony grip, with fitted gilded brass ornately scrolled guard and patterned pommel. The ebony grip shows a couple of service/age chips to beginning of pommel.
The slightly curved, un-marked blade measures 78 cm and features the classic 'blood groove' running along both sides of the blade, being the nickel variety which has stood the test of time and is in relatively untouched, excellent condition. The blade has at some point been snapped and expertly repaired. The metal service scabbard is in good condition, having some only one small dents towards the bottom chape area. Scabbard retains the twin floating suspension rings and small style drag. Overall length: 96 cm. The repair on the sword blade looks 19th century repair, these were common amongst these swords, both as a result of service use and also as many were snapped upon surrender during the Franco Prussian War of 1870, being repaired either by the victor or returned to the vanquished. Overall a lovely old timer, with a great long combat history.
