Sargeant J. Barrett appears on the medal roll of the 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers (India GSM), the roll is marked ‘transferred’ and ‘Gordon Highlanders’. He was serving with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders during the Boer War, the QSA roll dated 23/8/1901 gives his rank as Lance Corporal. By the time that the KSA roll came out 10/11/1902 he was discharged. It is possible that he was time expired and later recalled for the war. He may have taken his discharge in South Africa or bought himself out, as he discharged rather than transferred to the reserve. J. Barrett is noted as returning to England for discharge on 22 July 1902.

During WW1 he served with the South African Forces starting as a Private and finishing as a Sergeant. Interestingly the star and victory list his unit at 10th Field Ambulance, but the War Medal records his unit as South African Veterinary Corps.
