Offered is a India General Service Medal (1854 – 95), with clasp BURMA 1887 – 89, period engraved 1209 Pte G. Holmes 2nd Bn Leic. R. Comes with copy medal roll and British Army Embarkation Lists, 1871-1889

George Holmes was born in 1866, he enlisted 3/2/1885. He embarked on the Troop ship Malabar 6/12/1887 for India for the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He served in Burma to qualify for the IGSM with clasp Burma 1887 – 89.

Of interest is the discrepancy between the embarkation roll showing 6/12/87 and the medal roll for Burma service as 3/12/85 – 31/3/89

The 2nd Battalion had a very strenuous period of service in India and Burma from 1874, being engaged in the many punitive expeditions and skirmishes against the Burmese. The 2nd Battalion returned home in 1890.
