Offered is an India General Service Medal 1854 – 95, with clasp BURMA 1887 – 89, period script engraved 2553. Sergt W. Finlay. Norf: Regt. Comes with copy service papers. Sergeant William George Finlay, was born in Limerick, Ireland. A tailor by trade he enlisted as a boy soldier (16 years old) into the 1/9th (East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot (which became the Norfolk Regiment 1881) on 11/6/1880. Promoted Corporal 22/7/1882 and Sergeant 20/6/86, Quartermaster Sergeant 20/6/89. Transferred to Corps of Military Clerks 19/4/92. Army pay Corps 1/4/1893. Discharged 6/8/1894 with the 1911 census records him as living in Newcastle...

Discharged 6/8/1894 with the 1911 census records him as living in Newcastle working as a 'Sergeant Commissioner' shipbuilder.

His foreign service includes: Gibraltar 12/12/85 – 7/7/86. Gibraltar 21/12/87 - 10/2/89. India 11/2/89 – 18/1/91. Burma 19/1/91 – 22/3/92.
