Court mounted for display and comes with copies of the London Gazette and newspaper articles. Major Joseph Lewis Leyland was born on 26/6/1910 at Sunderland, Durham. He ran a gentleman’s outfitter and hosier shop in Kingston upon Hull and first joined the cadets in 1924. Major Joseph Lewis Leyland was born on 26/6/1910 at Sunderland, Durham. He ran a gentleman's outfitter and hosier shop in Kingston upon Hull and first joined the cadets in 1924. The 1939 census records that he was the Lieutenant Quartermaster for the 1st Hull Cadet Corps.
He was granted a Commission with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant for service with the Cadet Corps 9/4/1943.
By 1944 he was serving as a Captain and in 1948 a newspaper article recorded him still serving as a Major receiving a Cadet officers Long Service Badge and had 24 years’ service. Awarded the Cadet Forces Medal 16/11/1951 as Acting Major. Post war he continued to serve being promoted to Lieutenant. He died in May 1984 in Beverley, Yorkshire.
