Offered is a Queens South Africa Medal (1899 – 1902), with 2 clasps RELIEF OF KIMBERLEY, ORANGE FREE STATE, impressed named 9693 SEJT W. PALMER. A.S.C.; Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (G.V. 1ST issue), impressed named 9693 SJT. PALMER. A.S.C. Court mounted for display. Comes with copies service record and medal roll.
Sargent William Palmer was born in 1875 at Woolwich, his father was serving in the Army Service Corps at the time. He enlisted there into the Army Service Corps 1/11/1890 with his occupation recorded as ‘Baker’. He was 5’ 2” tall at the time.
He was appointed Bugler 9/6/91 and promoted to Trumpeter a year later. Appointed Lance Corporal Trumpeter 1/5/1893, but demoted 15/2/1894. Transferred to become a driver 5/9/1894. He began to progress through the ranks as 1898 becoming a Sargent 1/5/1900. He discharged on 31/10/1913.
His entire service was home establishment apart from South Africa 6/10/99 – 4/7/1900.
Sgt Palmer served 23 years, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 99 of 1914 and had grown to 5’9” tall.
