PRE WW1 FRENCH MOROCCO CAMPAIGN MEDAL HAUTGUIR & CASABLANCA CLASPS ARMY MILITARY

30mm wide circular silver medal on laterally-pierced loop and suspension bar with two olive palms supporting a crescent; the face with an oak-crowned helmeted female head facing left representing the French Republic, inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘GEORGES LEMAIRE’; the reverse with oak and laurel leaves, a cannon, a naval anchor and standards above an oriental fort, inscribed ‘MAROC’, with silver assay marks; on original ribbon with ‘CASABLANCA’ and ‘HAUT-GUIR’ clasps.

The medal was instituted on 22 July 1909 and awarded to military and civilians who participated in the ‘pacification’ of Morocco from 1907 to 1909. Two decrees of 1912 and 1913 prolonged its attribution to those who served up to 20 July 1912, the date of the promulgation of the treaty that placed Morocco in Protectorate status.
