The medal was instituted on 22 July 1909 and awarded to military and civilians who participated in the ‘pacification’ of Morocco from 1907 to 1909. Two decrees of 1912 and 1913 prolonged its attribution to those who served up to 20 July 1912, the date of the promulgation of the treaty that placed Morocco in Protectorate status.
