Lieutenant W.M. Townshend was commissioned into the 3rd Militia Battalion Leicestershire Regiment as a 2nd lieutenant. Promoted Lieutenant 18th September 1900 and resigned his commission 28th May 1904. Even though the 1st and 3rd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment served in South Africa, Townshend served in South Africa with the 7th Squadron 4th (Glamorgan) Company, 1st Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, which arrived in South Africa on 20 March 1900.
